This was an assignment for a class I took; we were instructed to make an exterior environment in a month. Our theme was "Asian". We could make it any kind of environment so long as it had some sort of Eastern element to it, but besides that it was up to us to create a working modular environment.
For my environment, I wanted to do something with kind of a village in the mountains or forest vibe. I liked the idea of having the scene set at night so the warm lights could spill out from the lanterns and houses. I wanted the environment to look well-maintained and lived in; somewhere you wouldn't be surprised to see people walking about.
To make the assets and their textures, I used Maya and Substance Designer. I did make the materials myself, but I followed along with tutorials for everything but the bamboo and bamboo leaves, which aren't too visible anyway. Everything was compiled in the Unreal Engine.
Over the month, I got much more familiar with Substance Designer and UE4 lighting.
